12-Year-Old Admits to Fatally Shooting His 29-Year-Old Mother After Initially Fabricating a Tale

Authorities said Monday that an Alabama boy owned up to unintentionally gunning down his mother to death after initially concocting a tale about how she died.

According to NBC News, the relatives of the 12-year-old boy, who has not been publicly named, was complying with officials, and his case will be handled through the family court system.

The victim has been identified as Ayobiyi Cook, 29, according to the sheriff’s office.

The shooting happened shortly after midnight Saturday in Forestdale, which is just north of Birmingham.

The sheriff’s office said in an initial statement that a man was seen fleeing the house where Cook’s body was discovered shortly before someone called 911. According to the initial statement, there appeared to be no forced entry.

In a second statement, the sheriff’s office stated that investigators determined that the boy’s account was “not possible.”

“The child eventually gave a true account of what happened,” according to the statement, adding that the child inadvertently fired a gun, killing his mother.

According to the statement, evidence discovered at the scene suggested that the shooting was unintentional.

“This is a tragedy for the Cook family and the entire community,” according to the statement.

The sheriff’s office did not disclose any further information about the incident.
