Authorities reported Thursday that they had apprehended a 19-year-old suspect in the downtown Austin mass shooting that killed a tourist and injured more than a dozen people.
De’Ondre Jermirris White was detained about 2:30 p.m. in Killeen, Texas. He was apprehended without incident and hauled to the city jail, according to ABC13.
Initially, authorities apprehended two different individuals, both of whom were teens. Travis County District Attorney Jose Garza said on Tuesday that the charges against the two teenagers will be dismissed.
However, he stated that no final charges have been filed against anyone involved. When White was apprehended, police indicated he would be charged with murder, according to KCENTV.
Travis County District Attorney Jose Garza praised Austin residents for their patience on Thursday and assured them that officials finally have the correct person.
“Based on both forensic and eyewitness testimony, we have full confidence that the person responsible for the shooting has been arrested and is no longer a danger to our community,” Garza said. “At this time, we believe that Mr. White was the only shooter.”
