A 2-year-old boy grabbed a firearm off a night stand and fired one shot in his home that hit both parents.

The mother was hit in the leg and the father suffered a wound to the back of his head. The toddler that fired the bullet was also injured by the gun’s recoil, according to WGME.

Authorities say a 3-week-od baby was also in the room at the time of the shooting but was not hurt. All three were transported to Mid Coast Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

“The question of how the boy was able to pick up and fire the weapon is of great concern and is being investigated,” Merry said, according to the report.

“This situation, while disturbing, could have had an even more tragic ending,” the sheriff said.
