A man from Virginia was arrested on Tuesday in connection with the shooting deaths of three people, including a young reporter.

Antoine M. Legrande Jr., age 24, is charged with three counts of second-degree murder in the deaths of Sierra Jenkins, age 25, Marquel Andrews, age 24, and Devon “Malik” Harris, age 25.

Moreover, he is charged with two counts of malicious wounding for injuring two others, as well as charges related to firearms.

Legrande Jr. was nabbed by the U.S. Marshals Task Force and the Special Operations Team of the Norfolk Police Department.

Countless hours of interviews and forensic investigation went into this case, to include following up on multiple tips originating from our community members,” Norfolk Interim Police Chief Michael Goldsmith said in a press release. “I am very proud of Norfolk’s detectives and their determination to see justice prevail for the victims and their families.”

On March 19, the shooting occurred just before 2:00 a.m. Jenkins and her best friend from middle school had been at Chicho’s Pizza Backstage in downtown Norfolk briefly before the shooting.

The Virginian-Pilot revealed that Jenkins was on-call for breaking news that night and that a publisher repeatedly asked her to cover the story without knowing she was connected.

Rory Schindel, manager of Chicho’s Pizza Backstage, said he learned of an altercation outside the establishment briefly after bartenders declared last call on Saturday at 1:30 a.m. local time. He recalled that customers were leaving when gunfire erupted.

CBS News reported that former Norfolk police chief Larry Boone told the Downtown Norfolk Civic League in the early stages of the investigation that the altercation began in the bar and restaurant over a spilled drink but finished in the street with gunshots.

Approximately 2:00 a.m., police officers in Norfolk were notified of the shooting, according to a department statement. Responding deputies discovered five victims with bullet wounds upon arrival.

Jenkins was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, where she was declared dead. Andrews, the father of two young children, was taken to hospital for care and died on April 12 nearly a month later. Andrews’ friend, Harris, a semi-professional football player, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Two other men were transported to the hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.

Jenkins had just turned 25 on March 13, the Sunday before her death, according to her father’s statement to the Pilot.
