A 3-year-old boy died after accidentally shooting and killing himself on Sunday.
Tinesha Jackson, the child’s mother, rushed him to a hospital with a gunshot to the head, according to an affidavit. He passed away in the hospital.
The child was later found to be in the care of his uncle when he and his 4-year-old brother were in Jackson’s bedroom, where he found an unsecured AR-15 pistol underneath a pile of clothing.
According to the affidavit, Jackson was still out getting the food with a friend whereas the uncle was sleeping at the time of the shooting.
When Jackson got home, she called Memphis police and went to the hospital, according to the affidavit. She is now facing a charge of criminally negligent homicide.
Tedrick Butler, the alleged gun owner, is facing several charges after investigators executed a search warrant at the residence on Wesley Drive in Whitehaven.
According to the affidavit, investigators discovered spent cartridge shells behind the residence, 2 AR-style pistols, a Glock 9mm pistol unlawfully transformed to full auto, a backpack that included marijuana, and extra marijuana in the closet.
Butler allegedly admitted to leaving the AR-15 in Jackson’s bedroom and to owning the backpack and other firearms while in custody. He also did admit to trying to remove the weapons from the bedroom just before the search, according to police.
Butler is charged with criminally negligent homicide, possession of a prohibited weapon, possession of a firearm while committing a dangerous felony, tampering with or fabricating evidence, and possession of a controlled substance.
