The Stockton Police Department has released video of an officer-involved shooting in February that claimed the life of a 54-year-old Stockton woman.

According to the Stockton Police Department’s produced video briefing released Thursday, a Stockton Police Department officer was stopped at a red light on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard when the driver of a gray car collided with the officer’s vehicle before fleeing.

The shooting took place on February 22. Tracy Gaeta, 54, of Stockton was later identified as the driver.

The officer whose car was struck attempted to pursue Gaeta after she made a u-turn on the I-5 on-ramp, driving toward the officer’s car, police say. The officer’s car then pulled over to avoid a collision.

Police say that after pulling over, the officer whose car was struck lost sight of Gaeta.

According to Stockton police, a dispatcher advised officers on police radios a short time later that they had seen a car fitting the description of the suspect’s vehicle driving westbound on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard after running a red light at Fresno Avenue.

A Stockton Police K-9 officer later informed the dispatcher that the vehicle was near Charter Way and Roberts Road and that he had initiated a pursuit, according to police in the briefing video.

The pursuit proceeded eastbound on Rolerson Road until it came to a dead end. According to Stockton Police, Gaeta’s car came to a halt at the dead-end on Rolerson Road as the K-9 officer exited his vehicle.

The officer’s body camera video begins as he exits his car.

Gaeta’s car can be seen in reverse on the video, colliding with the front of the officer’s car. The officer was thrown back into his vehicle. According to police, he struck his head while announcing over the radio that he was being rammed.

The officer attempted to exit his vehicle once more as Gaeta continued to back into the cop car, according to the video. After that, the officer fired his gun.

The body camera video shows Gaeta’s vehicle moving forward 16 seconds after the officer opened fire on her. As Gaeta begins to drive, the officer fires again.

Around 30 gunshots can be heard in a span of approximately 32 seconds, but an exact count is difficult due to the volume of shots.

Before the video ends five seconds later, the officer who opened fire is heard saying, “I got one down in the car, stage medics.”

Following the final shots, the Stockton Police Department reports that additional officers arrived on the scene and pulled the motorist from the vehicle.

According to police, officers made life-saving attempts. Gaeta was rushed to San Joaquin General Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries.

According to the Stockton Police Department, a multi-agency critical incident investigation as well as an internal departmental use of force review are now underway.
