During a confrontation with a fleeing motorist, 8 Akron police officers fired more than 90 shots.

An unarmed Akron man was hit dozens of times by a constant stream of more than 90 shots being fired by law enforcement officers following a chase early Monday morning, according to autopsy records.

The amount of gunfire and the severity of the injuries have prompted authorities and city leaders to brace for public outrage. The outpouring of emotion is only expected to grow as Akron Police release bodycam footage in the days ahead.

“Use of force cases are always ugly. This case is ugly times 10,” a police official familiar with the shooting told 3News Investigates. The official is not allowed to speak freely about the incident.

3News Investigates viewed photos of Jayland Walker’s bullet-riddled body, as well as the dozens of bullet fragments removed during the autopsy, using a public records law that allows direct access to autopsy records.

Summit County Medical Examiner Dr. Lisa Kohler stated that the completed autopsy report has not yet been written. This report is expected to be made public in the week.

Walker’s death has been ruled a homicide, according to Kohler’s office on Wednesday.
