Authorities said Tuesday that Haley’s mother, Shawna Browning, 29, and Browning’s girlfriend, Lauren Harrison, 34, were arrested in Detroit. Both are being held in the Wayne County Jail awaiting extradition on aggravated murder charges.

The manner and date of Haley’s death have not been made public. When her remains were discovered in December of last year, detectives estimated she had been there for at least a month.

Over the summer, investigators made public details of the case, as well as the news that they were using cutting-edge DNA technology — genetic genealogy — to determine the identity of the slain child.

To solve the puzzle, they have been collaborating with Virginia-based Parabon Nanolabs and its chief genetic genealogist, CeCe Moore.

Moore went to work, using the girl’s genetic profile to reverse-engineer a family tree and find her relatives, after Parabon extracted DNA from the girl’s remains. The investigation led them to Haley and Browning.

The girl’s remains were discovered earlier this year by a motorist who stopped at a rest area in the H.B. Van Duzer Forest State Scenic Corridor, a 12-mile stretch of Route 18 in Lincoln, Tillamook, and Polk counties.

The driver went beyond the parking lot to the Salmon River’s bank, where he discovered the duffel bag and its grisly contents.
