9-Year-Old Girl Shot in The Leg and Foot in Newark, New Jersey

An altercation between two teens ended with a 9-year-old being shot multiple times. Police believe the shooting stems from a dispute between the 9-year-old’s 15-year-old sister and a 16-year-old girl that took place earlier in the day.

Authorities say the 16-year-old came to the home with a unknown male and then gunfire erupted in the house, hitting the 9-year-old in the leg and foot.

“It is tragic that a dispute between two teenagers led to a young child being shot,” Newark Police Director Brian O’Hara said in a statement. “But this incident speaks to the dilemma facing communities all over the country this summer, after children have been away from the structure of their classrooms for the past 15 months due to the pandemic.”

The 16-year-old has been taken into custody.
