Authorities said a prop handgun fired by film star Alec Baldwin, who is starring and producing a Western film, killed his director of photography and wounded the director on Thursday at the film set near Santa Fe.
According to Santa Fe County Sheriff’s officials, Halyna Hutchins, the director of photography for the film “Rust,” and director Joel Souza were both shot.
Hutchins, 42, was taken to the University of New Mexico Hospital and declared dead by medical staff, according to authorities.
Souza, 48, was transferred to Christus St. Vincent Regional Medical Center by EMS to be treated for his injuries.
According to a Baldwin representative, there was a mishap on the set regarding the discharge of a fake gun loaded with blanks.
The 68-year-old Baldwin was spotted in tears just outside of the sheriff’s office on Thursday, according to the Santa Fe New Mexican, but effort to contact him for comment were unsuccessful.
