A judge in North Carolina demanded that law enforcement body camera footage of Andrew Brown Jr.’s killing be released to his family but not to the media until a state inquiry into Brown’s death is finalized.

Brown’s family must receive the videos within 10 days, according to Judge Jeffrey Foster.

The footage had been requested by an alliance of news outlets, but Foster upheld that the media lacked standing to request it, and that public disclosure would jeopardize the trust and safety of the deputies depicted in it, as well as the state’s investigation.

Brown’s family and lawyer will receive five body camera video clips and one vehicle cam footage, according to the judge. He ordered that all deputies’ faces and nametags be obscured.
