A shooting spree outside a widely known downtown nightclub on Sunday injured nine people, spurring a frantic search for at least 2 shooters and raising fears that mass shootings will become a “normal part of our culture.”

A brawl between two groups of individuals occurred shortly before the 2 a.m. closing time outside Mr. Pitiful’s in the city’s historic Over-the-Rhine district, according to Lt. Col. Mike John. He estimated that 15-20 shots had been fired.

According to hospital spokeswoman Heather Chura Smith, all 8 men and 1 woman who were evaluated at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center have already been released.

The incident was deemed “unacceptable” by Mayor Aftab Pureval, who praised the officers on the scene for their quick response, which likely saved lives.

The gunman was “part of a large, unruly crowd” on the street, according to Cincinnati Police Union President Dan Hils.

According to John, many individuals who fled the scene may have seen something useful to the investigation. He asked witnesses and anyone who had video of the shooting to notify the police.

A shooting in the neighboring Central Business District injured two people, but John said the attacks were unrelated.
