A man is being held in Clayton County Jail after police say he set off a bizarre chain of events. When it was over, he had shot himself and 3 other shoppers inside a crowded Walmart with a single gunshot.
According to police, it all started when a guy dropped his loaded firearm and attempted to catch it, but the gun went off. Four people have been injured, and the issue of gun safety is once again in the spotlight.
According to Lovejoy Police Department Sgt. Akeem Turnbull, the strange accident happened just before 12:30 p.m. in the sandwich shop section.
“He had a loaded firearm that was not in a holster in his waistband that fell,” Turnbull said. “He attempted to grab the firearm, and while handling the firearm, discharged it, and struck him in the leg.”
But it didn’t stop there.
“The bullet ricocheted and struck three other patrons who were inside the business,” Turnbull explained.
The 29-year-old man is now facing reckless conduct charges.
The gun nut and one of the women shot were taken to Grady Hospital, while the other two customers were handled at the scene. All were hit in the leg and are expected to fully recover.
