An Erie County home health care caregiver is facing attempted murder and theft charges after allegedly attempting to poison one of her patients with dangerous medicines.

A Sandusky police body camera was rolling when Mallory Giles, 34, of Huron, was questioned by police about a sequence of purchases she made while using credit and debit cards and the identification of the 93-year-old man she had been caring for at his Sandusky apartment.

“He had his credit cards that he was allowing the home health aide to use to make certain purchases that he needed for his needs, to make sure that things were met for him. However, at some point, she began taking advantage of that and started making purchases for herself,” Lt. Scott Dahlgren told FOX 8.

The 93-year-old victim’s daughter detected the fraudulent purchases on her father’s account and called the cops.

According to detectives, Giles appeared to have purchased more than $50,000 in goods using the victim’s credit and debit cards.

A cop tells Giles on the body cam footage, “You basically outfitted your entire house with all of these credit cards.”

“We believe there were shoes that were included in that, clothing, furniture for her residence, wall décor, outside lawn care items,” said Lt. Dahlgren.

While police investigated the theft charges, the 93-year-old victim was rushed to the hospital, ailing from a drug overdose.

He was rescued with Narcan, and physicians later discovered that he had been given powerful opioids that were not part of his regular medication.

According to Sandusky police, Giles allegedly mixed opioids with medication supplied by the victim’s doctor.

They claim she had a sinister motivation for allegedly poisoning the 93-year-old.

“She was trying to keep him medicated to a point where he wasn’t looking at bank statements and credit card statements and things like that, where she could just handle those kinds of things without him noticing,” said Lt. Dahlgren.

At the conclusion of their probe, police have arrested Giles on accusations of attempted murder and theft from a protected class, which reflect the victim’s age and declining health of the victim.

Giles is being jailed at the Erie County Jail on a $560,000 bond.
