A man has been arrested on suspicion of shooting and killing a 25-year-old pregnant woman before leaving her body on the side of road.

Cavanna Smith was killed by Kwanmaine Travion Boyd, 25, who was charged with capital murder. Boyd was apprehended without incident last Friday.

“He shot her like she was a dog, and I wouldn’t even do that to a dog,” said Smith’s sister, Brittany Wilson, a week ago. “When you imagine someone would shoot a dog and just leave them like an animal, in the middle of the street.”

Wilson stated she went to an ultrasound appt with her sister on Oct. 5, the day before she was shot dead, after learning she was pregnant.

Wilson stated that her sister was both nervous and excited. Smith informed Boyd that she was expecting a child, but he was not pleased.

The next day, Smith went to see Boyd to collect the money he owed her. Her texts to her family reveal that she was concerned that something bad might happen.

“She said, ‘I am going to get my money and if anything happens to me, this is where I am at,’ and shared her location,” Wilson recalled.

One of their other sisters received a terrifying screenshot from Smith’s best friend the same night. “I have been kidnapped, I’m in the back of Kwan’s truck,” Smith wrote in a text message sent at 6:45 p.m.

Smith’s family dialed 911 as soon as they saw the message. According to court records, a body was discovered on Reid Street during an investigation and later identified as Smith.

Police discovered a positive pregnancy test, a note, and an ultrasound picture in Boyd’s apartment, according to records.

Boyd was named as a suspect in the case, and he was charged with Smith’s murder on Nov. 9.
