Following the death of a 21-year-old female patient with cerebral palsy earlier this month, the High Point Police Department arrested and charged a woman.

According to WXII12, Briea Askew, 29, was charged with second-degree murder after leaving the patient in her care alone in a vehicle for five hours.

The victim was taken to Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist High Point Medical Center with an exceedingly elevated temperature of more than 110 degrees and was declared dead a moments later, according to WRAL.

According to police, excessive high temperatures and humidity, as well as the vehicle’s lack of air conditioning, all made a significant contribution to the death.

Askew was arrested and placed in the Guilford County Jail in High Point, in which she is being retained on a $200,000 shielded bond.
