Authorities reported Friday that a West Virginia man charged with trying to murder his sister, who had recently recovered from a two-year coma and named him as her attacker, had died less than a week after his arrest.

Daniel J. Palmer III of Cottageville was pronounced dead Thursday at a Charleston hospital, a day after being transferred there following an evaluation by jail medical staff, according to a news release from the state Department of Homeland Security, which controls the Division of Corrections.

The report did not specify the cause of death, and a spokesperson for the Department of Health and Human Resources, which supervises the state medical examiner’s office, indicated state law only authorizes the department to share autopsy results to family and law enforcement.

Palmer, 55, was difficult while in detention and during booking proceedings at the South Central Regional Jail, where he was held on July 15 after just being charged with attempted murder and malicious injuring of his sister, according to the statement.

His death likely brings an end to a highly unique case in which the case was halted for two years due to a lack of evidence.
