After getting off his school bus and trying to walk home, thirteen-year-old Zyair Harris was fatally struck by a vehicle.
The tragedy occurred around 4:40 p.m. on Wednesday. On Detroit’s east side, Zyair was dropped off near Nevada and Healy streets.
Although Zyair was struck by an oncoming vehicle, investigators have discovered that the fateful incident occurred because Debra White, a 65-year-old bus driver, allegedly failed to activate the bus’s stop sign and lights.
“My son was autistic, so you didn’t care, you just let him out, in the middle of the street. And then when he got hit, she pulled out, she saw him get hit and still pulled off,” said Cassandra Jones, Zyair’s mother.
Zyair died in the hospital as a result of complications.
The ABC Student Transportation bus driver has been charged with Second-Degree Child Abuse and Failure to Stop at the Scene Resulting in Death.
“I’m glad we got justice for Zyair. Thank you for that,” said Micaah Neal, Zyair’s godmother.
