Alabama Teacher Sentenced to Prison After Having Sex With 2 Students

After pleading guilty to indulging in a sex act with a student under the age of 19, a former Decatur High School teacher was sentenced to ten years in prison. Carrie Cabri Witt will serve her term in prison for 18 months, followed by 18 months in the community corrections program, according to CBS42.

In March 2016, the now-48-year-old was arrested and charged with having sex with two students, ages 17 and 18. She was a Decatur High School educator.

Witt’s lawyers contended that she had a constitutional right to have sex with the students after her arrest. According to Alabama law, everyone over the age of 16 who does not have a specific handicap is capable of consenting to sex.

Prosecutors, on the other hand, argued that the act was constitutional and needed to protect high schoolers from sexual approaches by teachers and other school personnel, according to PEOPLE.

According to AL.com, she must also register as a sex offender. Witt could have been sentenced to up to 20 years in prison.
