The principal, Melissa Carter, is under investigation by the Clewiston Police Department, after paddled a 6-year-old student as punishment. The Department of Children and Families is also investigating.

The State Attorney’s Office is investigating the case to see if criminal charges will be filed against Carter and Cecilia Self, the clerk in the video, according to Bret Provinsky, the lawyer for the 6 year old’s mother, according to WINK.

Florida is one of nineteen states that allow for corporal punishment. While private schools have prohibited the procedure, some public schools continue to do so, according to FOX4.

Although several Florida school districts send home a waiver asking parents for permission, Florida statutes on school corporal punishment do not require schools to obtain parental approval before paddling students.
