A Democratic candidate for state Senate recalls being assaulted by her Republican opponent at Friday’s State House demonstration against Roe v. Wade.
Jennifer Rourke, co-founder of the Rhode Island Political Cooperative, was reportedly assaulted by GOP candidate and Providence police officer Jeann Lugo. Lugo is on leave and facing charges.
Bill Bartholomew’s video appears to show Lugo punching Rourke.
As a result, Lugo, 35, is facing charges of simple assault and disorderly behavior. He has been suspended with pay awaiting a criminal investigation and administrative inquiry. He is a three-year member of the department who was off-duty at the time.
The incident is still being investigated. Lugo will be arraigned again on July 8.
