As worldwide cases of monkeypox exceed 1,000, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has increased its advice to travelers, advising them to take extra precautions such as wearing face masks.

The CDC raised its alert level to 2 on Monday, urging people to “practice enhanced precautions” in order to stop the outbreak, which has scattered to 29 non-endemic countries in the last month. The highest level of alert, level 3, would advise against unnecessary travel.

While the risk to the general public is low, the heightened notice recommends people to avoid close contact with sick people, notably those with skin or genital sores, and sick or dead animals. It recommends anyone with symptoms, such as an unexplained rash or lesions, to avoid contact with others and see a doctor.

Monkeypox is a rare virus illness that causes rashes, fever, headaches, muscle discomfort, swelling, and backpain.

The recent outbreak in North America, Europe, and Australia has health officials worried about community expansion.

According to the CDC, as of Monday, 1,019 confirmed and suspected cases of monkeypox had been reported in 29 countries.
