A convicted murderer who was released from prison last year has been charged with the murder of a South Florida woman whose remains were found in a canal after she had been missing for 3 weeks.

Erika Verdecia, 33, was found dead near Fort Lauderdale on Saturday, and Eric Pierson, 54, was charged with first-degree murder hours later. Pierson admitted to stabbing the single mother four times with a screwdriver on September 25, according to Sunrise police.

Pierson was freed in September 2020 after serving 27 years of a 40-year sentence for the 1993 assault and strangling murder of 17-year-old Kristina Whitaker, whose killing sparked a movement for lengthier prison sentences.. He had entered a guilty plea to murder in the second degree.

Pierson broke into a house in 1985 and slashed a woman’s throat. He was paroled after serving 4 years of an 18-year prison sentence for first-degree attempted murder.
