New Orleans Cop Gunned Down While Intervening in an Altercation at a Basketball Game

A Tulane University police officer was shot and killed Friday night while working security at a basketball game at Carver High School after attempting to interfere in a dispute between a staff member manning the game’s entrance and another individual.

The suspect went to George Washington Carver High School for the game when he got into an altercation with a staff member, according to the NOPD report.

According to NOLA.com, the slain officer was identified as Martinus Mitchum, 38.

According to NOLA.com, the suspect was arguing with a school employee when the cop attempted to intervene and take away the suspect from the building.

According to the report, the suspect pulled out a pistol and shot the officer in the chest.

Arriving sheriff’s deputies discovered the officer suffering from a gunshot wound and rushed him to University Medical Center, where he later died, according to FOX 8.
