According to the BBC and police, a Nigerian senator and his wife were arrested in London on Thursday and charged with plotting to bring a 15-year-old boy into the country to harvest his organs.

Ike Ekweremadu, 60, and Beatrice Nwanneka Ekweremadu, 55, were both charged with conspiracy to organize the travel of another person for the purpose of exploitation, specifically organ harvesting, according to police.

Ekweremadu is an opposition senator from the southern state of Enugu and a former deputy senate president.

Police said they were made aware of the purported plan after receiving information of possible offenses under modern day slavery legislation. The child involved had been taken to safety, and efforts were underway to provide additional assistance.

The youngster involved was a 15-year-old male, the court was informed when the couple appeared at Uxbridge Magistrates’ Court in London, according to the BBC.

The couple is being held in custody until the next court hearing on July 7, according to the BBC, after the prosecution informed the court that the Attorney General’s approval was necessary for the case to move forward due to jurisdictional concerns.
