Doctors In Houston Are Investigation Why Some COVID Patients Develop Massively Enlarged Tongues (Image: Screenshot/YouTube/John Daniels)
Doctors in Houston are scrambling to find out why a significant subset of COVID-19 patients acquire dramatically swollen tongues, according to KHOU .
The disorder is known as macroglossia. It makes eating and talking impossible for sufferers. Dr. James Melville of the UTHealth School of Dentistry has become an expert in treating the illness.
According to Dr. Melville, there have only been two reported cases in the United States. He has learned about seven additional cases since then. All nine of the individuals had been intubated in a hospital. Eight of the nine are African-American. Two had had strokes, and the remaining seven had been hospitalized with COVID-19 previous to developing macroglossia.
