In California, a 4-month-old Chihuahua puppy was discovered with an arrow in its neck, prompting an investigation.
After being found in the unincorporated area of Desert Hot Springs in the Coachella Valley on Monday morning, the puppy was taken to an animal hospital.
According to Riverside County Animal Services, a woman called the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department to report that she was awakened by the “screaming” dog.
A sheriff’s deputy and an animal services officer were dispatched to gather the female chihuahua and transport it to the Coachella Valley Animal Campus in Thousand Palms for care.
The young dog was sedated, and X-rays of her wounds were taken by veterinarians. The veterinary team endorsed the removal of the arrow from the dog’s neck because the projectile fortunately managed to avoid any vital arteries.
“For someone to willfully shoot this poor pup with an arrow is disgusting,” Riverside County Animal Services Director Erin Gettis said in a news release. “We are shocked and we hope someone can provide us any information as to who did this.”
The dog’s injuries are minor. Gettis said animal services will treat the dog and find her a new home.
