Dave Chappelle Show Canceled by Minnesota Venue After Social Media Backlash

Dave Chappelle was scheduled to do a stand-up comedy act at First Avenue in Minneapolis on Wednesday night, but the concert was scrapped at the last moment due to criticism. Chappelle has been embroiled in a controversy regarding his Netflix show “The Closer.”

“The Dave Chappelle show tonight at First Avenue has been cancelled and is moving to the Varsity Theater,” the announcement said.

“To staff, artists and our community, we hear you, and we are sorry. We know we must hold ourselves to the highest standards, and we know we let you down. We are not just a black box with people in it, and we understand that First Ave is not just a room, but meaningful beyond our walls.”

The trio of Minnesota shows were announced on Monday, and tickets to the first gig sold out within minutes on Tuesday.

However, numerous admirers of the prominent downtown venue spoke out against the comic, causing the show to be canceled.

Following the announcement of Chappelle’s upcoming gigs, First Avenue’s Twitter account was inundated with comments criticizing the choice to allow the comic to perform.
