Drive-By Shooting in Newark, New Jersey Sends 9 People to Hospital

Officials said 9 people were shot in a drive-by shooting in front a bodega in Newark, New Jersey, on Thursday evening.

Police were called to the 200 block of Clinton Place around 6:20 p.m. after receiving a ShotSpotter alert, according to Newark Acting Public Safety Director Raul Malave. Officials initially stated that seven adults and one juvenile had been injured. An additional adult victim was later revealed.

According to authorities, 4 of the adults and 1 juvenile were taken to Newark Beth Israel Medical Center for care. The remaining 4 adults were transported to University Hospital. Officials defined all eight victims as being in stable condition.

Authorities have not yet stated what actually caused the shooting. The extent of the victims’ injuries was unknown at the time.

Police are looking for a white Honda that was stolen in Jersey City.

Acting Attorney General Matthew Platkin said his office was collaborating with state police and Newark police officers to solve the “senseless” shooting.
