Authorities revealed Thursday night that Gonzalo Lopez, a fugitive convicted murderer, was killed in a shootout with police officers in a county south of San Antonio. Three weeks had passed since his escape from an East Texas prison transport bus before the news broke.

The news was announced hours after the bodies of five members of a Houston-area family were discovered in a Centerville weekend residence. Lopez, according to authorities, is the “prime suspect” in the murders.

TDCJ officials reported that police officers in Atascosa County, just south of San Antonio, noticed Lopez driving the vehicle they believe he stole from the crime scene in Leon County, where the bodies of a family were found.

They pursued Lopez and ultimately punctured his tires. Authorities reported that after a brief pursuit, Lopez crashed his truck into a tree and exited with 2 firearms.

According to TDCJ officials, he fired multiple shots at the officers, who responded by killing him.
