According to NBC Montana, a Montana dad and his 18-month-old daughter were shot dead on Tuesday after a man allegedly drove into them and gunned them down with a shotgun.
David Siau, 39, and McKenzie Siau were killed in the assault, while two other women were severely injured and continue to stay hospitalized. Christina Siau, 30, who was carrying their daughter McKenzie at the time of the incident, had previously dated the suspect, Derick Madden, 37.
After Madden attacked her with a knife, Christina killed him. According to officials, he had been “suffering from mental health issues.”
The attack took place on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation in East Glacier Park on Sunday night, just outside Glacier National Park. According to the sheriff’s office, Madden “intentionally” drove his vehicle into the bunch before plunging into a tree and walking out with a shotgun.
According to the sheriff’s office, “Madden began shooting at the same victims he had just hit or attempted to hit.” He shot David Siau to death and “continued to shoot at the victims” as they attempted to flee.
“During this attack Christina fought for her life and despite receiving critical injuries, fatally wounded Madden,” the sheriff’s office said, without elaborating on how she did it.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, the attack was “isolated to this incident with a clear nexus between the victims and Madden.” While David and Madden died at the scene, McKenzie Siau was taken to Indiana Health Service in Browning, where she died from her injuries.
Christina Siau had relocated to East Glacier from New York, where she had been visiting relatives. Madden, who was originally from Oklahoma, had been working in the area.
Two other children in the group were not hurt, according to the sheriff’s office.
“The investigation continues and detectives are working tirelessly to find all the details and circumstances surrounding this horrific event,” the statement concluded.
