First US Monkeypox Case Confirmed in Massachusetts, Health Officials Say

According to WJAR, a monkeypox case has been confirmed in Massachusetts, but the state’s Department of Public Health says there is no danger to the general public.

The case was confirmed, according to the state, in a man who traveled to Canada recently. The DPH reported that the unidentified man was being treated at Massachusetts General Hospital and was doing well.

First confirmed late Tuesday at the state’s health laboratory in Boston, and then on Wednesday confirmed by CDC, the DPH said.

“DPH is working closely with the CDC, relevant local boards of health, and the patient’s health care providers to identify individuals who may have been in contact with the patient while he was infectious,” the Department of Public Health said in a release.

This was the first reported case of monkeypox in the United States this year.
