Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed the “Don’t Say Gay” bill into law on Monday, putting an end to months of discussions over state legislation that has ignited a national debate.

The bill, dubbed the Parental Rights in Education Act, will make “classroom discussion about sexual orientation or gender identity” illegal in the state’s public schools.

DeSantis, a Republican running for re-election and widely regarded as a possible future presidential candidate in 2024, stated that the bill would also guarantee that “parents can send their kids to school to get an education, not an indoctrination.”

“The bill prohibits classroom instruction about sexuality or things like ‘transgender’ in grades K through 3,” DeSantis said as he stood behind a podium that read “Protect Children, Support Parents.” “In Florida, we don’t just think parents should be involved. We insist that they be involved.”

DeSantis was surrounded by students, parents, the bill’s sponsors, and other conservative state lawmakers as he signed the bill into law.

The bill’s sponsors have stated repeatedly that it would not restrict students from discussing their LGBTQ families or prohibit classroom conversations about LGBTQ history, such as the 2016 attack on Pulse, a gay nightclub in Orlando.

Rather, they have stated that the bill would prohibit the “instruction” of sexual orientation or gender identity, without providing examples during House and Senate debate.
