Singer Chris Brown Charged For Keeping Pet Monkey Without Permit (2018)

The owner of a Florida exotic animal breeding business was sentenced to 5 years probation for sellingan illegal a capuchin monkey to artist Chris Brown.

The buyer is identified as a celebrity in California in a federal indictment, but essential points match an Associated Press report that wildlife agents seized the singer’s pet monkey after serving a search warrant on his Los Angeles home in early January 2018. Brown was also noted in court on Wednesday during the sentencing hearing for monkey breeder Jimmy Hammonds in Florida.

Brown shared a photo of the capuchin monkey on Instagram, attracting wildlife agents. After Brown surrendered his rights to Fiji and paid $35,000 for the monkey’s treatment, prosecutors dropped all charges.

A federal judge in Tampa instructed Hammonds to pay $90,000 to a Fish & Wildlife Service fund. His probation requires 8 months of home confinement.

Brown paid The Monkey Whisperer Ranch in Parrish, Florida, operator Hammonds $12,650, according to the indictment. Without a permit, transferring a capuchin monkey is illegal in Florida and California.

Hammonds admitted conspiracy and three ESA violations. Prosecutors said he sold endangered cotton-top tamarins in Alabama, South Carolina, and Wisconsin.

Prosecutors argued Hammonds deserved more than a year in prison to discourage similar offenses.
