Adreian Payne, a former Michigan State University basketball player, was gunned down in Florida overnight. He was 31 years old, WXYZ reported.

The shooting occured around 1:37 a.m. at a home in Orlando, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office. Just after man in his 30s was shot, deputies were called to the scene. Payne was later recognized as the man in question.

He was rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. According to police, the alleged perpetrator was identified as 19-year-old Lawrence Dority, who was apprehended at the location.

Payne, who was born and raised in Dayton, Ohio, earned a second-team All-Big Ten selection after the 2014 season.

Throughout his time at Michigan State, he was also noted for his bond with Lacey Holsworth, an 8-year-old girl fighting neuroblastoma. She died on April 8, 2014, after helping him cut down the basketball net after the Spartans won the Big Ten Basketball Tournament.

Payne was picked 15th overall by the Atlanta Hawks in the 2014 NBA Draft and has since played for Atlanta, Minnesota, and Orlando.

He has since played basketball in Greece, China, and, most recently, Lithuania.
