Fort Jackson officials say the soldier who was charged on Wednesday after a video of him in a violent exchange with a young Black man went viral on social media has been suspended.

Officials confirmed Sgt. 1st Class Jonathan Pentland was transported to Fort Jackson officials late Wednesday evening by the Richland County Sheriff’s Department.

According to Fort Jackson authorities, Pentland has been removed from teacher duties pending the conclusion of the inquiry and the results of the criminal charges.

According to Richland County deputies, Pentland and his relatives were “extracted” from their Summit community residence Wednesday night after mass demonstrations during the day turned disruptive and the home was vandalized.
