The US delegation and other guests were hurried to safety after shooting erupted and crowd control gas was deployed on adjacent protesters during Haitian President Jovenel Mose’s funeral on Friday.

Two weeks after he was gunned down — and his wife, Martine, was injured — in an assassination still shrouded in mystery, military pallbearers carried the late leader’s body in a closed wooden coffin.

According to Reuters, the mournful event was soon broken by furious yells of protest from fans who accused authorities of being responsible for Mose’s murder.

As Haiti National Police Chief León Charles came, the raucous audience began yelling “Assassin!” just before the service began. Others started yelling, “Where is Jovenel?”

According to the Miami Herald, the US ambassador to the United Nations, Linda Thomas Greenfield, and the rest of the American mission cut their trip short due to gunshots that began at 10 a.m.
