Man accused of opening fire on Fort Lauderdale bus

Police have arrested the man they believe is the gunman in a deadly Broward transit bus incident that happened on Friday, according to NBC6.

After the incident, police arrested Jamal J. Meyers, 34, and charged him with two counts of first-degree murder, two counts of attempted murder, and one count of felony possession of a weapon.

Officials said 2 individuals were killed and two others were hospitalized after a gunman started opening fire on a Broward County Transit bus Thursday, causing an accident in front of the Fort Lauderdale Police station that injured 3 more people.

The bus came to a halt in front of the police station at 1300 West Broward Boulevard, where it collided with two other vehicles, according to Fort Lauderdale Police. There were no police officers involved in the incidents.

According to police, the bus driver heard several shots being fired and made the split-second decided to pull to pull in front of the police precinct. When an officer outside the station heard gunfire, he went to the bus to start investigating.

“The bus driver in this particular case, her quick actions I am sure saved lives,” interim police Chief Luis Alvarez said. “Kudos to her. She deserves to be applauded for her actions.”

According to police, the suspected shooter then exited the bus and surrendered. Officers also found a firearm.

Inside the bus, police discovered four people who had been shot. According to police, one person died at the scene and another died later at the hospital. 2 other survivors were still in the hospital.

According to police, 3 people had been treated at the scene as a result of the crash.

After the shooter was apprehended, police believe there is no longer a threat to the public.

Meyers is still facing additional charges, according to police, and the motive is still being investigated.
