Police in Winter Haven are looking for a 43-year-old man who they suspect attacked a 73-year-old man outside a Publix on Saturday afternoon.
According to the victim, the suspect, Don Walker, nearly hit him with his truck before things got violent.
Surveillance footage captured the incident. According to police, Walker can be seen exiting his truck and punching the victim once in the face.
When police say the victim stated he was going to call the cops, he returns to his truck. Walker then appears to push the man to the ground and strike him at least seven additional times.
A Publix employee dialed 911. “He is bleeding. His phone is all broken,” said the caller.
The victim claimed that Walker drove his truck into the crosswalk, coming dangerously close to colliding with him. According to the victim, he yelled at the driver. That was the point at which punches were thrown.
Outside Publix, residents expressed concern about the video. They stated that it is incidents like this that keep them constantly on their toes.
Winter Haven Police said Facebook tips assisted them in identifying Walker as a suspect. They have issued a warrant for his arrest on charges of battery on an elderly person and tampering with evidence due to the fact that he broke the victim’s phone.
“I was raised that you respected the elderly, and you wouldn’t do anything like that no matter what they may have said to you, so it’s just horrible and there’s no excuse for it,” said Winter Haven Chief of Police David Brannan.
According to police, the victim is recovering from head and arm injuries.
They remain on the lookout for the suspect. If you recognize Walker or have information about his whereabouts, you are urged to contact Winter Haven Police Detective Haynes at 863-287-9459.
