Police in Virginia are looking into what they believe to be the unfortunate accidental death of a baby of 18 months and the father’s corresponding suicide.
Just before noon on Tuesday, police were summoned to the 14100 block of Aldengate Road in Chesterfield, Virginia, after receiving a call reporting that a kid had been left in a vehicle over several hours and the father was inside the house making suicidal remarks.
According to WWBT, when police arrived at the scene, they discovered an open car door in the driveway and a dead 18-month-old child inside the house.
The father of the child was discovered dead in the woods behind the house, apparently from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Callers warned that the father would perhaps commit suicide.
When the child wasn’t at daycare, relatives allegedly made those calls because they were speaking with the father and noticed something was off.
According to their investigation, the police believe the father found the child after leaving him in the car while he was at work. The 18-month-old was reportedly in the vehicle for at least three hours.
The father allegedly drove home after that, brought the child inside, and then committed suicide.
“This is a horrible tragedy on so many levels, and our hearts go out to the family and friends that are going to deal with this, but we would be remiss in not taking the opportunity for people to take this moment and realize how important it is to check your vehicles,” said Chesterfield County Police Lt. Col. Chris Hensley.
