According to investigators, a medical worker on a COVID-19 unit used a deceased patient’s bank card to purchase goodies from a vending machine.

According to the West Midlands Police Department, Ayesha Basharat, 23, of Birmingham, England, grabbed an 83-year-old woman’s card after she died at Heartlands Hospital earlier this year and used it to buy chips, candies, and sodas.

Basharat allegedly stole the card and made six transactions from the machine just 17 minutes after the woman was declared dead.

The card was then invalidated, and Basharat was detained at the hospital. Basharat allegedly told police that she discovered the card on the floor and “muddled it up” with her own card when she paid.

Basharat pleaded to theft charges and was sentenced to two five-month jail sentences at a court hearing on Wednesday.
