Three individuals were killed Thursday in an eight-vehicle collision on Interstate 85 in an area called “death traps” by the county coroner.

At 2:50 p.m., the incident occurred in the southbound lane near exit 90 in Gaffney, SC.

According to Cherokee County Coroner Dennis Fowler, the crash killed Thomas Newman McElroy, 58, and his wife, Ruth Ann McElroy, 60, both of Townville.

Karen Marie Goggin, 60, of Virginia, also died in the crash, according to Fowler.

According to troopers, the chain-reaction crash was initiated by a tractor-trailer that rear-ended several automobiles. Six people were sent to the hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening, according to WYFF.

According to Fowler, the crash occurred in one of two southbound single-lane “chutes” built to reroute traffic around the I-85 expansion project.
