Jamal Sutherland was a mentally ill black man who died in police custody.

The Charleston County Sheriff’s Office stated that Jamal Sutherland died on January 5, 2021, at the Sheriff Al Cannon Detention Center in North Charleston. Deputies pepper sprayed and tased Sutherland, 31, multiple times after he appeared to resist leaving his cell for a bail hearing, according to surveillance footage.

According to a news release made available by the sheriff’s office at the time, Sutherland was declared dead after medical personnel at the facility attempted to save his life.

According to Graziano, who was elected in November and took over as sheriff on the day of the incident, the two deputies implicated in Sutherland’s death had been initially suspended for 30 days and are currently on desk duty.

Scarlett Wilson, the prosecutor for Charleston County, said her office is investigating the case and will make the decision “before the end of June” as to whether anyone will face criminal charges.
