Oscars viewers were left confused following an exchange between comedian Chris Rock and actor Will Smith, with many questioning whether the on-stage altercation was scripted or unexpected!
Chris Rock cracked a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith’s bald head, which did not sit very well her husband, Will Smith.
Rock joked while presenting the award for best documentary, “Jada I love you, ‘G.I. Jane 2,’ can’t wait to see it.”
The camera pans to Pinkett Smith, who rolls her eyes as she sits next to Smith.
“That was a nice one,” Rock said, seemingly in response to the joke not going over really well.
Pinkett Smith has been candid about her battle with alopecia, an autoimmune condition that causes hair loss.
Rock then laughed and said, “Oh uh,” as Smith approached him on stage and appeared to hit him in the face.
When he returned to his seat, Will Smith yelled, “Keep my wife’s name out your f***ing mouth!”
Smith returned to the stage approximately 40 minutes later to accept the Oscar for best actor and apologized for the incident to the Academy and his fellow nominees, but did not address Rock by name.
He accepted the award with tears in his eyes for his portrayal of Richard Williams, Venus and Serena Williams’ father, in the film “King Richard.” Williams, Smith stated, “was a fierce defender of his family.”
