Detectives in Miami-Dade County are looking into the death of a 24-year-old officer with the Transportation Security Administration of the United States Department of Homeland Security.

Leshonte Jones was murdered on Monday at the Coral Bay Cove apartments in south Miami-Dade County’s Naranja neighborhood by a gunman in a dark four-door Nissan, according to authorities.

Detective Alvaro Zabaleta said that they are still trying to determine the motive and what caused the senseless violence.

During the shooting at 25801 S. Dixie Highway, Jones’ three-year-old daughter was wounded. She was taken to Nicklaus Children’s Hospital by Miami-Dade Fire Emergency crews. She was in stable health, according to Zabaleta.

“I am shocked and deeply saddened at the senseless act of violence that took a young, vibrant officer away from her family and away from us way too soon,” Daniel Ronan, a TSA federal security director, said in a statement.
