Investigators say a Guyana man tried to smuggle 35 live finches into New York in his jacket and pants so they could compete in singing competitions.

According to a criminal complaint, Kevin Andre McKenzie, 36, was captured with the birds packed inside hair curlers at JFK Airport on Monday.

Birds were found inside hair curlers tethered to his legs and inside his jacket, according to pictures from the complaint.

McKenzie is said to have arrived in the country on JetBlue flight JB1966 from Georgetown, Guyana, on Monday and was chosen for examination by customs officials.

He agreed to waive his Miranda rights and decided to tell agents he was paid $2,500 to sneak the birds into the country, which he was supposed to get after leaving the airport.

Some finch species are already available in the United States, but species found in Guyana ‘are presumed to actually sing and are therefore more profitable,’ according to the complaint.
