Tammel Esco, 42, was arraigned on Tuesday and is being jailed without bail, according to the Westchester County District Attorney’s Office.
Esco was charged with many serious felonies, including attempted second-degree murder and assault as a hate crime.
He was apprehended shortly after the 67-year-old Filipino woman was brutally attacked in the entrance of her apt building on Riverdale Avenue in Yonkers, New York on March 11.
According to authorities, Esco, who had 14 prior arrests and was convicted of assault in 2011, called the woman a “Asian bitch” and trailed her into her highrise.
Esco was captured on surveillance video striking the woman over 125 times in the head and face, trampling on her seven times, and spat on her.
The victim had brain hemorrhage, facial fractures, and head and face lacerations. The attack previously grabbed global news, prompting local officials and campaigners to call on New York’s Legislature to expand state funding for Asian American communities in the state.
