During an hours-long standoff in Watauga County on Wednesday, authorities say that a man murdered his mother, stepfather, and two deputies. During the standoff, a third officer was also shot.

According to deputies, Isaac Alton Barnes, 32, is accused of killing 36-year-old K-9 Sgt. Chris Ward, 25 years old Deputy Logan Fox, Michelle Annette Ligon, 61, and George Wyatt Ligon, 58.

Barnes, who was Michelle and George Ligon’s son and stepson, died at the scene.

After the homeowner and his family failed to show up for work or return phone calls, the two deputies were gunned down while responding to a welfare check at a home on Hardaman Circle in Boone. After uncovering that all of the residents’ automobiles were parked on the property, officers entered the house.
