Authorities say a Maryland man was apprehended Thursday after pepper spraying and stabbing a deli clerk who tried to prevent him from taking the tip jar.

Bryant Whack, 32, of Silver Springs was reportedly begging for money inside Max’s Kosher Café on the 2300 block of University Boulevard in Gaithersburg at 12:38 p.m. when he grabbed a tip jar off the counter and took off, according to the Montgomery County Department of Police.

According to authorities, when an employee challenged Whack after following him out of the establishment, Whack pepper-sprayed and then stabbed the worker before fleeing the area.

Unidentified adult male victim was transported to a local hospital in serious condition. No immediate update on the victim’s condition was provided.

Later, officers spotted Whack sprinting behind a laundry and arrested him.

Whack was being jailed without bond on first-degree assault charges.
