According to court documents, Adrian Lewis, the husband of missing Shanitia Mikell Eure-Lewis, has been charged with first-degree murder and using a handgun to commit a crime in connection with his wife’s disappearance.

The last persons who saw Eure-Lewis were her friends and relatives at Gethsemane Baptist Church, who reported her missing to Virginia State Police on July 18, 2022. Eure-Lewis was also the subject of an Ashanti Alert when she vanished.

Finding Eure-Lewis’ body is currently the city’s top priority, according to Chief Steve Drew. “It is my hope and prayer that we find Ms. Lewis quickly. The community is hurting. The church is hurting, but for her family and her children we need to do that.”

Eure-Lewis was last seen by her children arguing verbally with Lewis before leaving the house with him in his pickup, according to a police complaint.

Lewis and Eure-Lewis were having marital issues, according to information provided by Eure-Lewis’ sister to detectives, and on July 5, 2022, Eure-Lewis informed her husband that she intended to file for divorce.

Lewis allegedly expressed suicidal thoughts to Eure-Lewis on July 14. Eure-Lewis allegedly took all the firearms out of their home and carried them, along with her kids, to her sister’s house for safety.

On July 17, Lewis and Eure-Lewis picked up their children at 1:30 a.m. Lewis called his sister at 9:40 a.m., saying his wife was having an affair and asking her to take care of their children.

He called her again around noon, saying he and Eure-Lewis had a “verbal altercation” and that Eure-Lewis “jumped out of [his] truck” near a Wawa on Jefferson Avenue and Harpersville Road.

The sister tried to call Eure-Lewis after this conversation but couldn’t. She got texts from Eure-Lewis’ phone, but they never spoke.

Investigators think Lewis had Eure-Lewis’ phone.

At 3:45 p.m., Eure-Lewis’ sister saw Lewis’ truck parked next to a dumpster at 6216 Jefferson Avenue. Lewis was allegedly putting items in the garbage when she went to investigate, including a shovel with dirt, a brown purse and sandals, a blanket with an alleged handprint, and papers with Lewis’ and Eure-Lewis’ information.

Court documents say blood was found in Lewis’ truck’s front passenger seat and lower seat mount. Lewis said the blood was from his dog, who was shot by a neighbor, but detectives later confirmed both dogs were healthy and had no gunshot wounds.

Lewis bought a flight to Jamaica the day after Eure-Lewis disappeared. He was detained at Dulles Airport Monday.

According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Lewis was escorted from the airport at 4:15 a.m. His baggage contained his wife’s passport and credit cards.

Eure-Lewis hasn’t been seen since the driveway argument her children seen.
